Why You Should Write A Letter to Your Future Self

As we enter the New Year we all are filling our goals, vision boards, year to-do’s and hoping for success, wealth and prosperity for our future selves. As I was with a group of very inspiration women who I truly look up to many of them were sharing how they write a letter to their future self. This stopped me in my tracks right away. The thought of reading a letter from myself that I wrote a year ago was enticing.

And now, here we are. I’m sharing what I used to create a letter to my future self and the steps I took to write my letter.

Areas I chose to focus on:

  1. Family

  2. Relationships and Friendships

  3. Career

  4. Finance goals

  5. Physical fitness

  6. Mental Health and practices

  7. Travels

  8. Big purchases I want to make (such as purchase a car, house, etc.)

When Writing My Letter:

  • I made sure to include my daily thoughts, practices and also my futuristic thoughts, visions, dreams and goals for the year

  • I touched on all of the areas above and where I hoped my headspace would be and what I would accomplish

  • I made sure to share the gratitude and happiness I have in my life now and to note how far I’ve come

  • I tried to write as well as I could how my current headspace, thoughts, feelings, emotions and heart space is right now because in December 2020 I think I will be in a very different place in 12 months

After looking more and more into this I’ve seen that this is one of the most beneficial practices you can do when starting the New Year. Because in December 2020 when you read it back to yourself you will see how far you’ve come. This is so important because when the Holidays come around next year and the new year comes you begin to see everyone else’s achievements and forget to celebrate your own.

Tip: You can write this letter and then store it for 2021. Or if you’re like me and lose everything, I will be storing my letter digitally on my computer!

Here’s to celebrating our own achievements!
